A minimum of 13 people perish and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant growth of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party urged an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
