Seven accused members of German far-left group face trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the network was responsible for targeting locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or are in custody.”
