The Former President's Woke Alarm Misses The Continent's True Threat: Economic Decline.

The recent US national security strategy offers a misguided assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas pose an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The actual challenge facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry 13.5% growth for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, roughly half of the world’s top fifty technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity raises a vital issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to advance serious reform. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been steady. But, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
