"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the band?" a text arrives. "My request was to ask if I can become their fourth member."

There's just a single issue: I also wants to be the Haims' newest recruit. And we're far from alone. Several high-profile fans have also petitioned for the role.

The evidence suggests a special quality is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their career playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy Award contenders.

In the tradition of the greatest ensembles, they're a close gang. Their videos frequently depict them marching in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such pure joy you find yourself thinking, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a guitar'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the trio. "It is the biggest honor. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate others to form a group."

"Therefore everyone are welcome to be the honorary member of Haim."

Award Milestone

The group have called into their homes, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the nomination is deeply felt by the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge milestone," continues Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the women that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The project emerged from a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that odd liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The words track departures and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real time who they are becoming.

"I love description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to actively work on ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That recent toughness demanded a different sonic direction – more unpolished and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The band's openness inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their romantic misadventures.

One man left Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Future

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their standing in the industry.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an global following.

However Haim will forever be their number one priority.

"We have been making music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still making music."
