New research indicates that people who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using these medications need to be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through dieting generally see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
People who have discontinued the jabs report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," said one woman.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
